Get an instant website price estimate
This handy tool will give you a quick idea of what each route costs an energy firm. Change any option and the table updates. It's an instant estimate of a website price, not a quote.
| Route | Up front | Monthly | 3-year total | Yours at the end? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Do-it-yourself builder (Wix, Squarespace…)No one writes the words on this route - that job comes home with you. | £0 | £10 to £30 | £360 to £1,080 | No |
| Managed subscription siteLive fast with nothing up front. Stop paying and the site goes with it. | £0 | £49 to £95 | £1,764 to £3,420 | No |
| Freelancer build (you own it)Widest quality range in the market. References matter double here. | £700 to £2,000 | £10 to £25 | £1,060 to £2,900 | Yes |
| Independent specialist / small studio (you own it)Strategy, copy and conversion thinking included. For reference, we build this kind of site for £600 fixed. | £1,500 to £4,000 | £10 to £25 | £1,860 to £4,900 | Yes |
| Full agency (you own it)A team and a process. Right for multi-location firms; overkill for most local businesses. | £5,000 to £12,000 | £10 to £25 | £5,360 to £12,900 | Yes |
Three-year totals assume the monthly fee holds for 36 months. Owned routes include hosting at £10 to £25 monthly. Domain renewal isn't in the sums. These ranges don't say whether VAT is included, so check that on any quote you get.
Read the last two columns first. The cheapest route on day one is rarely the cheapest by year three, and two of the five leave you owning nothing. The table should help you figure out which trade-off suits the firm you run now.
The highlighted row is the market band for an independent specialist, which is the closest match to how we build. It isn't our price. Ours is lower, and it's set out below.
This isn't a price checker for valuing an existing domain or its potential worth. It only prices getting a site built and keeping it online.
For energy firms
What pushes the price up for an energy firm
Size and who writes the words move the sums most. Energy firms feel both, because each technology you install and each town you want work from usually needs its own page.
How many pages do you need?
Count your pages before you ask for quotes. Say you install solar, batteries and heat pumps across eight towns. That's 3 for the technologies and 8 for the towns. Add a homepage, about, reviews, finance and contact and you're at 16, which is the Larger setting.
Here's what size does to the three-year total, with the words written and no extras:
| Size | Freelancer | Specialist | Agency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small: up to 5 | £1,060 to £2,900 | £1,860 to £4,900 | £5,360 to £12,900 |
| Standard: 6 to 10 | £1,210 to £3,300 | £2,060 to £5,400 | £6,010 to £14,400 |
| Larger: 11 to 20 | £1,360 to £3,800 | £2,310 to £6,100 | £6,860 to £16,500 |
The DIY and managed routes don't change with size here. The calculator prices them by the plan, so check any page limit before you sign up. For what to put on them, see solar website design, heating engineer websites or EV charger installer websites.
Who writes the content?
Ticking the words adds £200 to £500 on the freelancer route. The calculator treats them as already included with a specialist or an agency, so the tick doesn't move those rows. On a DIY builder, the job comes home with you.
Energy content takes longer to get right than most. Your accreditations, grant lines and finance wording all need checking with you, and finance can only go where you're allowed to promote it. Ask who does that checking before you compare prices.
Survey bookings and quote forms
A simple contact form costs nothing extra here. A survey booking or quote form adds £250 to £500 on a freelancer build, and up to £500 with a specialist. The agency row doesn't move: we assume this kind of project already sits inside its range.
Care plans
Hosting keeps a site online. A care plan pays for ongoing maintenance: someone to handle updates, backups and small changes. Ticking it takes the owned routes to £59 to £120 monthly, which adds £1,764 to £3,420 over 36 months. That can be more than the build, so ask what's actually covered.
The working
Cost estimation: where each number comes from
These are James's own market bands, first published on his earlier site, then compared with what we could find on 3 November 2026. They aren't a survey. Website costs vary because you're not being quoted for the same thing.
The figures cover design and website development cost, plus running costs. Cost estimation is only as good as its inputs, so here's what each one rests on, including where it's thin:
| Item | Figure used | What it rests on |
|---|---|---|
| DIY builder | £10 to £30 monthly | James's bands. One big website builder lists £12 to £36 for its lower three plans, depending on billing. Its top plan costs more. The plan is the cheap part: you rent the software and do the rest. |
| Managed subscription | £49 to £95 monthly | James's bands. One UK studio lists £79 with a one-year minimum. That's one price, not a market check. |
| Freelancer | £500 to £1,500, before extras | James's bands. Another UK firm says about £500 to £1,000. |
| Independent specialist | £1,500 to £4,000 | James's bands only. Published prices disagree most here: the studio above lists £499 for a 5 to 10 page site, and the firm above says bespoke small business sites start from £8,000. |
| Full agency | £5,000 to £12,000 | James's earlier guide said from around £5,000 into five figures. The £12,000 top is our cut-off. Bigger jobs with project management on top can pass it: the firm above goes to £30,000 and more. |
| Hosting on owned routes | £10 to £25 monthly | James's bands. Ours and the studio's are both £20. |
| Care plan | Adds £49 to £95 monthly | Our assumption, and the least certain. James's earlier guide put proper care plans at £50 to £150, so treat this as the low side. |
| Size steps | Plus 25% and 60%, half that for specialist and agency | Our working assumption, rounded to the nearest £50. No outside source. |
| Words and forms | Words add £200 to £500. Forms add £250 to £500, or up to £500 with a specialist | Words are our assumption. James's earlier guide put booking systems at £250 to £1,000, so complex booking can cost more than this. |
| Left out | Domain, email, VAT, your time | Published ranges for a domain run from £5 to £30 a year. Your own hours on a DIY build don't appear anywhere, and they're usually the largest cost on that route. |
Before you pay anyone
Rent, own or buy from us: the sums and what to ask
Renting makes sense if cash is tight or you're testing a new service. Owning makes sense once the site has to bring in jobs for years, because stop paying a subscription and the site goes with it.
Our own design and build sums
We charge one fixed price for web design: £600 one-off, or £50 a month for 12 months, £600 in total. No VAT, no interest. That's well under the specialist band above, so don't take the highlighted row as our quote.
It covers a 20-page site, every word written for you and the first year's hosting. After that, keep it with us for £20 a month, with small changes free while we host it. Or take your files and host it anywhere.
Hosted with us for 36 months, that's £600 plus 24 payments of £20: £1,080. Our renewable energy website offer lists exactly what's in it.
We don't suit everyone. We take one installer per trade in the town where they're based, so yours may be taken. It doesn't cover everywhere that firm is willing to travel. And a site won't bring traffic by itself: getting found on Google is separate SEO work.
Six questions for any quote
- Whose name is the web address in? It should be yours.
- Do I own the site once it's paid for? Can other developers pick it up, or does it only run on your system?
- What happens if I stop paying? And is there a minimum term?
- What does the monthly fee cover? Get it in writing: hosting, updates, changes, support.
- Is the price with or without VAT? And is brand design included, or billed on top?
- Can I see live energy sites you've built? Ask whether they're still bringing in enquiries. Here are ours, with the honest numbers.
