Start with local SEO and the map
Google says three things decide local results: relevance, distance and prominence. Local SEO is the work on the first and third, because you can't move your house.
Optimisation starts with relevance: your Google Business Profile lists the real work: repairs, servicing, installs, central heating. Prominence comes partly from reviews and from other websites linking to you. Google also says there's no way to pay for a better local ranking. Source: Google.
Three Google Business Profile rules that catch engineers out
Google's guidelines are strict, and a suspension costs you the map. These matter most if you work from a van.
- No keywords in your name. "Smith Heating Sheffield Boiler Repairs" breaks the rules unless that's your real name.
- Hide your home address. If customers don't come to you, it's a service-area business. Virtual offices aren't eligible.
- Keep your area believable. Google says about 2 hours' driving from your base, though some firms can justify more.

One page per job, such as boiler repair, then one per town
One "services" page can't rank for repairs, servicing and installs at once. Each job needs its own page, and each town you want work from needs one with real jobs on it.
NuRenewables' site is laid out this way, with its services first, then its areas. Town pages only work with proof from that town. Pages that only swap the name are what Google's spam policies warn against.
Reviews that name the job
Ask after every job, and reply to every review. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.
A review that says who fitted what, and in which town, is more useful to the next customer than "great job". We give you a short link to send, and you never write them for customers or pay for them. Fake reviews are banned by law.
Build for the quiet months now
Breakdowns bunch up when it's cold. Servicing and planned installs can fill the gaps, but only if they already rank by then.
New pages take months to settle, so summer's work needs writing in winter. If you're already fully booked until spring, we'd say to spend this winter on your servicing pages and reviews.
Why generic trade advice falls short
Most guides lump you in with SEO for plumbers, or with American heating HVAC firms. The method carries over, but the searches and the trust signals don't.
Your customers look for boilers, servicing and Gas Safe registration, not cooling. So good SEO for heating engineers means publishing something different too. SEO for gas engineers goes deeper into registration and landlord work. If you're adding low-carbon work, see SEO for heat pump installers.
